Week 5 check in

Hi everyone!

Welcome to February. Wow, that happened fast.

Usual reminders:

Round 1 of the 2014 Talechasing short story challenge and critiquing circle is now open. The deadline is April 1 and the totally optional theme is "Ocean". If you plan to participate, please make sure you check out A Critical Discussion of Criticism (if you haven't already).

If there are concrete goals you want to be kept accountable for, please let me know. I hope those of you who have already nominated goals will check in and let us know how you are going... else, be prepared to deal with an orc raiding party :)

Welcomes, Greetings and Hellos

How has your week been? Grab a drink, pull up a chair and settle in for a chat.
There's a thick smoke haze over the area today and it is playing merry havoc with my hay fever. Ugh.

Got blasted by the heat this week, though it looks like it will let up on Tuesday. I've been down with another cold, so no swimming.

I did, however, watch the Pro Bowl with my dad and spent some time hanging out with my sister and nephew yesterday. It was very lovely.
Ugh another cold. *good thoughts* I hope the weather'll turn into something more manageable soon and I'm glad to hear you did have some lovely times this week. ^_^

Boo for sickness! Yay for family time! I hope you get back to 100% soon.

Oh dear. It can't be nice with all these colds. *hug*

Glad you got to have some nice family time, though.

The heat is going to hit us hard this week, too. And I can't even hide in night shifts from it. Eek.

It's a shame to miss out on so many opportunities for swimming when we're getting to the end of summer (WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN). Hope you get a few more splashes before season's up, though I guess with indoor swimming you could go in winter if you were feeling masochistic enough.

Ugh, between the cold and the hay fever, it's a wonder you're able to concentrate enough to get anything done. Glad to hear there was some nice family time, though! Hope the heat lets up soon!

Woooooooooooooooork. So much work. O_O

Which considering I have a part-time job probably says a lot about how well it suits me. I was going to spend Thursday awesomely productive and... nothing. I all but keeled over asleep all day. It's been pretty busy, though, and I had to deal with a couple of high stress situations, so it's not really surprising to find myself tired out the way that I am.

Ever onwards, I suppose! I should go to bed at a decent time tonight. I did get a fair bit done today! I ran errands and caught up on some comments. ^_^ (And worked.)
Be sure to give yourself the rest you need, it sounds like this week was pretty taxing!

This week has been fairly work-hectic, though that is (thank goodness) tapering down now into more manageable levels. However, it does mean I've not done very much else.

I did finish Traitor's Moon (Nightrunners #3) *ahem* not at all at midnight last night despite my utterly exhausted state. SO much love for that series! I've also been watching more Torchwood with my husband (he's the Dr. Who fan, I've not seen it before). The second series is a lot of fun and the character development really goes up several gears. Also, it's a handy way to get my Cardiff-fix whilst I'm stuck over here (work, plus the dratted car broke last month *sigh*).

I crashed hard off the zombie shift run but have come back onto an even keel just in time to start 6am shifts, which is ... um ... good? I did have a weekend full of crepes and I seem to have scored the next weekend off as well, so that much is very good indeed.

Moving date is getting closer and I seem to be procrastinating in every way possible to avoid it. Sigh. I would like to say I expect to have grown up by age 50, but I doubt it.

Hello! I'm not sure where the week went, and next week looks to be busy (and snowy) as well. I had a whole to do list this weekend, but it all went up in smoke due to weekend-lethargy, which happens a lot more frequently since I started working. I did manage to watch District 9 on Saturday and really liked it despite a friend having told me all about it some time back. I loved the way the story was 'framed' in that mock-documentary style. I found the main character interesting, although the other ones could've used a bit more detail. I may watch it again, but after a bit of a break - the first hour made me nauseous due to all the 'hand-held' style shooting.

Also started reading a new book - Flesh and Fire, by Laura Anne Gilman. I don't know how I ended up with this one when I was supposed to start that Homeland book, but...

I've had a very hot week. I'm thoroughly sick of this heatwave. I'm very pleased that next week is predicted to be cooler.

Meanwhile, I had a very busy weekend. On Saturday I went to the Fash 'n' Treasure markets and bought books and DVDs (and a necklace!) Then I went to a friend's place for a pre-renovation sale and bought more books. That evening I went to the in-laws for family dinner.

Yesterday I went to my family's for lunch and finally managed to do a significant amount of reading.

Goals & WIPs

What creative projects have you been working on this week and how have they been coming along? Whether you are looking for someone to celebrate or commiserate with, we're always happy to support our friends. Although if you're looking for help with taming unruly characters, you'll likely be on your own for that :D

People with nominated goals

Please note these can be changed at any time

ladylight: Finishing Corpseraker
annarti: 500 words a day on Silent Harmony: Gold (or every second workday).
nihiriki: 300 words a day
little_lynnet: 3 new scenes of Space Ghosts and 6 chapters of That Novel.
silvanime: Finishing edits on the Undertow anthology
sildheblessed: Finishing and submitting a short story to the FableCroft anthology.
15 of 21 stories finalised. Of the remaining, only 3 are stories I'm the primary editor on. I actually have no more work to do until I hear back from authors.

I'll be continuing to make editing my top priority as the work comes in, but in the meantime I find myself looking around at all the other bits and pieces I haven't been doing lately. This may or may not translate into work on Wolfwinter during the coming week. There is also a short story market or two I'm thinking I might check out.

I think LJ ate one of your username tags. ^-^;

I spent this last week or so pondering how to tackle certain aspects of That Novel. I think I'm mostly decided, really, but I don't know. The whole post is here for the curious, but the gist of it is: do I want to make it a public WIP? (I don't knoooooow. T_T)

Faaaaaaaail. I've been naughtily distracted by cricket and Nostalgia Critic. I have no excuses, I've just been terribly lazy .-. I can drag it back in February though, just you watch me!

Work continues on the story bible. After posting some of my musing on this story, definitely have some things to sort out and think about before forging on.

I haven't been back to Corpseraker since the 9k scribbling business. Night shift is never good for coherent English. I found some old and/or forgotten excerpts while I was searching for old photos the other day, though, including Schiri making himself unpopular with Nuan/Immovan and more recently, how not to cheer Kaliana up.

I should be packing today (should have been packing all weekend), but will probably try to write instead. I think my soundtrack is getting a little weary - need a rehaul ...

This week was kind of bad due to tiredness and eye strain towards the end of the week, I did manage some writing Monday, Tuesday and then Friday. I've stopped with the 300 words a day goal since that was January's goal, but I'm not sure what February's aim should be. Or, rather, I know what it should be but I can't say it fills me with joy. I have most of my NaNo 2013 divided into 11 half-finished chapters (due to my piecemeal writing method) so logically I should spend February revising those half-finished chapters and filling in ALL of the gaps there, but this is a bit tedious and involves brain-frying rewriting. I think I'll start small and say that February (being a short month) is to be devoted to rewriting/finishing two 'chapters' - any two of them, but 1 and 2 are the most complete. I was horrified to see that these 11 'chapters' comprise of only 'part 1' (aka, the beginning) of the story. I have too many characters and too much stuff of explain/set up. D:

My story has been sent out to beta. I always find this bit very nerve-wracking! (BTW, what was the procedure for asking for critiques here?)

Meanwhile, I've started work on a story for my niece's first birthday. I don't generally write for children (for good reason) so it's quite a challenge for me. Hopefully she'll like what I wrote.

Inspiration

Have you come across something that has set fire to your imagination? Have you found an interesting article you'd like to share? Perhaps you've been reading something good or seen something exciting at the movies?
Not exactly inspiration, but after months of not being to listen to anything but baroque music (with a few exceptions here or there - NaNo 2013 is stubborn that way) I've finally turned my attention to something else and this week has been spent listening to music from Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore. I should listen to more opera - it's amazing what people can do with their vocal cords >:O I keep suggesting to my characters that they should maybe drop all this demon-hunting and running around and put together an opera instead (and let the demons do the lighting) but no one has shown any interest, sadly. Maybe this will be NaNo 2014??

I started reading The Book Thief a few days ago and am loving it so far. It's a fantastic story but the thing I love best is all the little lists and drawings scattered throughout. I love books with little extras like that. It's reminded me how much I want to create a book like that myself one day.
