Week 2 check in

Hi everyone!

Well, 2014 got off to a roaring start here at Talechasing with our first check-in garnering 125 comments--most of which related to elves. It has been very entertaining, so thank you to those who participated. I hope we didn't put off the rest of you :)

If you're looking for further discussion of elves and The Hobbit, ladylight has posted her review of The Hobbit and saiena shares her research on Legolas' lineage.

A reminder that Round 1 of the 2014 Talechasing short story challenge and critiquing circle is now open. The deadline is April 1 and the totally optional theme is "Ocean". If you plan to participate, please make sure you check out A Critical Discussion of Criticism (if you haven't already).

If there are concrete goals you want to be kept accountable for, please let me know. I hope those of you who have already nominated goals will check in and let us know how you are going... else, be prepared to deal with an orc raiding party :)

Welcomes, Greetings and Hellos

How has your week been? Grab a drink, pull up a chair and settle in for a chat.
Well and truly back to it this week. I'm swamped with work.

I did manage to get out to the arboretum again this week and had a lovely wander around. There are photos up on my journal. I think most of you are already on my friends filter, but if you are not and would like to see, just yell.

Supposed to have a D&D game starting in 2 hours. The table is currently strewn with the contents of my pantry while I wage war on the ants that keep getting in. I'm not sure I'm going to have everything clean in time...
Good luck with everything! I hope the D&D session turned out to be a lot of fun! <3 I hope you'll get a chance to relax alongside the busy-ness, though. The Arboretum sounds like a wonderful place to wander around in. ^_^

Sigh...I can't wait to visit the arboretum in the botanical gardens over here again. Will have to go check your pictures!

Good luck with work, and the war against the ants!

My omnipresent ants are mysteriously invisible this year. I'm not sure what's happened or whether they're secretly planning some sort of coup.

Good luck with all your editing. We're already halfway through summer (! :<) so I'm sure the work will be over before you know it, too ... albeit replaced by new work.

Definitely sounds like you've been more productive than you thought! Congratulations on getting things done! (And, again, good luck with the work being so busy. *good thoughts*)

And I'm thrilled your reread hasn't disappointed you yet! I hope it won't! (Oh! And speaking of books, the friend I loaned The Privilege of the Sword to sent it back, so I hope to get to it soonish. Probably somewhere in the spring as it's giving me spring-reading vibes for some reason. I thought you'd like to know. ^-^)

Sounds very busy! It is nice to hear that the experiments are going well, at least. The crafting sounds like a pretty nice way to unwind.

Did you give your brother the Jayne hat for Christmas?

Well, I've been at work for less than a week and already feeling run ragged. *sigh* I've spent a fair few days wishing I'd gone on to study something else at university, or at least minored in something practically useful. I shouldn't think like that, I know, but that's where I've been at.

It feels weird to say that I'm actually doing fairly all right, but I am. I'm usually cheerful, slowly getting writing and reading done and just, in general, making the best of everything. ^-^

*hugs* I am glad to hear that your mood is holding up and that you are still getting a chance to do some reading and writing.

Uff...first week back at work, and I'm already tired. Getting back to work after a holiday is always surprisingly hard, considering I'm supposed to be refreshed from all that rest. ;)

Can't remember too much about the week, except that my head is now mostly stuffed with elves. ;) Thanks again for the great discussion. I've been listening to lots of music and finally finished Feast of Souls - last year, I'd already finished 3 books (short ones) by this time. This book didn't really grow on me and I kept putting it down every few pages, so now I'm debating whether to read the second book or not...

The weather's been crazy lately. We go from rain and above zero temperatures to -10 to -20 and then back to rain and 0 plus temps. D:

Reading all of the comments here, I feel a little guilty about the extremely lax week I had. I hope you all managed to recover! I am sure I will catch up to you sooner rather than later.

Due to many docs still being on vacation, I didn't have a clinical session Monday or Friday, making it a four day weekend. I could have been so productive, but instead I opted to play video games. I...I have nothing to say for myself. I have heard from the upper years that this semester tends to start off very empty and then come back with a vengeance in March.

I'm hopelessly beset by House Things and related anxiety-making items. I can feel my holiday relaxedness from last week turning into something a bit more frenetic and frazzled, which is really not what I want returning to face That Day.

Tomorrow I think I will seek coffee. I should pack boxes, but I will coffee. SO THERE.

In happier news, I have successfully failed to send any important emails for the last three days by having Scrivener open at the same time as my web browser whenever I start my PC. I have written a lot and it is still fun to be evil, though staring at the screen gives me a terrible headache these days.

Goals & WIPs

What creative projects have you been working on this week and how have they been coming along? Whether you are looking for someone to celebrate or commiserate with, we're always happy to support our friends. Although if you're looking for help with taming unruly characters, you'll likely be on your own for that :D

People with nominated goals
Please note these can be changed at any time

ladylight: Finishing Corpseraker
annarti: 500 words a day on Silent Harmony: Gold (or every second workday).
nihiriki: 300 words a day
little_lynnet: 3 new scenes of Space Ghosts and 6 chapters of That Novel.
silvanime: Finishing edits on the Undertow anthology

Have I missed anyone?
Argh, edits! Had a meeting with my co-editor on Skype and realised again how much work is still to be done. I'm looking forward to it being done at the end of the month.

I also have most of Wolfwinter put into Scrivener now, which is really helping to highlight the structural issues. I see much work ahead.

I am partway there! By which I mean I'm on track for the stated goals. At least I'm on track for January, so presumably for the whole quarter as well. (I still can't think of my goals here as being longer monthly. Maybe I should just try it and see how it goes? I might make it! I'd be sorely behind in that case, though! I shall have to spend Sunday getting a good chunk done.)

I'm happy to report that I've managed my 300 words/day goal every day so far except one. I worked on NaNo 2013 (needs a title!!) mostly, even though I should look at ocean/sky/some other short instead, really, because I don't want to put in the first part of NaNo 2013 as my first quarter submission.

Anyway, everything looks a bit funny right now as I stagger through my newly godless plot/world, wondering things like, so...can demons possess animals? What about trees? (Why haven't I throught about this before?)How would humans really get along with humanoid species who seem immortal and have demon-frying abilities? Would humans ever see demons as potential allies without divinities to say 'these chaps are ok' and 'no, go and kill these ones!'? Elsewhere, I'm trying to keep my protagonists from bringing in dozens of new characters in the form of families and friends and pets...I have a headache...

I was highly motivated last week and got a lot done on the story bible for my...novel, I guess. This week, nothing has been done. I think my only goal before next check in is to write a relatively succinct and logical summary that I can post here and get some feedback on.

silvanime

I've written about 9,000 words of Cometfall and Corpseraker, usually when I should have been packing boxes or calling people about adult things.

The best thing about Scrivener is that it effectively manages my terrible habit of writing patchwork-quilt style. The worst thing about Scrivener is that it does nothing to cure me of my habit of writing patchwork-quilt style. I have continued one section in sequence, got bored and hopscotched forward a few scenes through things I felt like doing at the time - ooh, mangonels! ooh, icy phantoms! ooh, a big rock!

Then I partly wrote the ending, because I can.

Ugh.

I don't know yet if I'll have something non-schizophrenic from this particular story to submit in April - I certainly won't have this kind of writing time after this week - but I'll try to comb its hair in the early sections at least ...
