Check in, Week 48

Hey all!

The poll results are in for the 2014 short story challenges. We will be featuring the themes of ocean/sky/mountain/city and the word limit will be 10 000 words.

It has also come to my attention that these challenges don't allow space for those of us intending to spend next year focusing on novels. Would it be helpful to have some kind of space for novel writers to post their own goals and be kept accountable? I'd love to hear thoughts in the comments.

Welcomes, Greetings and Hellos

How has your week been? Grab a drink, pull up a chair and settle in for a chat.
Having a high pain day. Bleaugh. Hopefully it will ease up in time for me to visit a friend in an hour or so.

The last week has been a bit more quiet, though not a whole lot more productive. I have been pondering projects for next year.

I also managed to see my nephew again for the first time since his birthday. He seems to be doing a good job of settling into life and has spent most of it napping.
Seems like your nephew has got the right idea!

I'm working again! Only part-time/casual, and back at the same place as let me go three months ago, but at this stage anything is a blessing. No admin, all design, and no more feeling useless :D
Yay! Have you started back already? How is it going?

I'm alive, it's December 1st (in Canada) and there's only 10 days to go until I am free of this semester. Honestly, I am less stressed than I have been for the last few weeks, likely because classes are now over I have had time to really buckle down and study. My first exam is pathology, which is open book. I haven't spent too much time studying, but I am reviewing and organizing my notes so that I know where to look for information when I need it.

I am slowly, but steadily, clawing my way to freedom.
How many years are left to go?

I'm definitely glad to hear that you are feeling a bit less stressed. It seemed like it was really getting to you there for a while.
Hello! We had our first snow storm of the season this week, with more coming tomorrow. Work has been hectic, and I received some good/bad news that I'm not sure how to feel about.

Since the end of NaNo, I've been really relaxing - listening to music, remembering that I have a guitar and friends to write to, and reading.

There were loads of 'Black Friday' sales this weekend - goodness knows why, since Canadians don't celebrate it, usually, and our Thanksgiving was way back in October...Anyway, I was bad, and bought a Kobo ereader at 50% off :P I should have it next week!
It's hard to think of snow storms when the summer weather is kicking into gear here.

Work news, eh? Sounds ominous.

I'm so glad to hear you've been taking time to properly relax. I suspect you've needed it.

Ooo... Kobo! Got anything on it, yet?

WIP

What creative projects have you been working on this week and how have they been coming along? Whether you are looking for someone to celebrate or commiserate with, we're always happy to support our friends. Although if you're looking for help with taming unruly characters, you'll likely be on your own for that :D
My November Project picked up a bit this week and I managed some rather lovely photos. Not long left to go.
According to my calendar, you've made it! Well done :)

I've been plotting book three of my four-book series this week. I rambled a bit about my basic writing 'process' too, including a possible addition which I hope will make things easier down the track, especially in the last 10 chapters where my planning always falls to pieces XD;

(It's flocked, but just let me know if you want to read. I feel I should have more Talechasers on my flist, anyway!)
Love that icon of yours.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the new part of your writing process turns out for you.

No work done on stories or story bibles this week. That's okay, the characters seem to be happy to rattle about in my brain for a bit.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal and the Canadian Federation of Medical Students recently sent out an email asking for student editors and peer reviewers for their new Humanities blog. They claim it will only be an hour a week commitment for peer reviewers, but their email was frustratingly low on details. Applications are open until December 31, so I plan to get in touch with them and see what they are actually looking for in a peer reviewer. I think it would be interesting, and anything to fill out my CV for residency applications is nice. If nothing else, I can try and contribute to the blog once it is up.
I can see you are definitely a sucker for punishment. I'm also a wee bit skeptical that being a peer reviewer only takes one hour a week. Still, it does sound rather interesting.
I just made it with NaNo, finishing 10 minutes before December 1st arrived! :P I was terribly behind up until the last day, when I woke up and realised that I still had over 7000 words to go, but strangely enough, I never once felt I couldn't make it (well, except at 11 PM, when I saw I still had 2000 words to go :S). It was a very different experience this time around, although I suffered the usual crises (not sure where the story is going, inhumanly demanding word counts, eyestrain and arm pain, etc.). I had been hoping to keep a daily log, but just didn't have time for it. I hope instead to do a write-up, like I did last year, of the experience.

For December, I have a few small (hopefully fun) things planned: a small story rewrite and putting NaNo 2013 in order so I can see where to go from there. I'll also have to start thinking about next year's challenges, because the topics are a lot harder than I anticipated. I seriously didn't think ocean/sky/mountain/city would win! XD
Congratulations! 7k in a day, that is a MAMMOTH effort XD

I'm with annarti--that is a massive effort. I look forward to seeing that write up once you have recovered.

Woohoo! That's fantastic - congratulations! :D
(Apparently you get a 40% discount on Scrivener if you win NaNo ... worth looking into perhaps?)

I was also very surprised. And a little daunted, because it's rather more specific than I anticipated. But will give them a go anyway ;)

Inspiration

Have you come across something that has set fire to your imagination? Have you found an interesting article you'd like to share? Perhaps you've been reading something good or seen something exciting at the movies?
Talechasing feedback

Would it be helpful to have some kind of space for novel writers to post their own goals and be kept accountable? Is there something else that is on your mind in relation to this community or the way it is run? All suggestions are gratefully welcomed.
Yeah the novel-thing was my main reason for opting for 5k, but happy to go with 10 :D It's not like we HAVE to submit something to every challenge, so it could well be a nice distraction during inevitably block moments.

Interesting idea, to have a space just for novels/novel goals. I usually just lump everything in the WIP section, but maybe a monthly thread for goal-tracking would help? I'd love to finish something novel-length sometime, though I don't know when that would be, seeing as I finish things pretty slowly.
